It's really hard to discuss the issue with people that don't want to know. We veg*ns have a reputation for being pushy about this stuff, and I think it's important to defy that stereotype.

I've been veg for 17 years, and I simply do not bring it up myself--I will talk someone's ears off if they bring it up, but that's my way. I've been very lucky, in that the people in my life have been receptive to my lifestyle; when I met my husband, he and his whole family (8 of 'em) were meat-eaters. Now, almost 9 years later, there are only three that still do, the rest have been "converted." Lead by example is probably the message.

I will wholeheartedly recommend Howard Lyman's "Mad Cowboy" as a resource. The book doesn't prominently feature the treatment/cruelty toward animals, but instead takes a long look at the damage that the industrial meat complex does to the environment and to human health. It's a quick read, too.
