Subject: What's wrong with the system?

Over the past few months I have watched horrifying video footage of what really happens to innocent animals at factory farms. It's definitely given me a wake up call.
I would really like to know- How can there be laws that protect household pets from abusive pet owners but no laws protecting animals at factory farms? Aren't they animals too? They're just in a different setting. What is wrong with the system? I thought being intelligent species that we are, we could have laws that could make this possible. Were human beings so we should have a greater sense of civil well being.
