Hi Phil,

You know, the hardest thing to do for so many of us is build visible muscle size. Now for me, that is major issue as my dna makeup does not allow me to grow my muscles appreciably. My sons, however, don't have such a problem. They look at weights and build muscle mass - so there you go! However, my muscle strength has improved many times over since I started weight bearing exercise over 15 years ago.

If you are eating enough quality food throughout the day, chances are you are eating enough protein as well. Extra protein does not automatically translate into big muscles. Correct weight training targeting the various muscle groups with moderate weights is the best and quickest way to reach your goal.

Double check what you are eating as if there is too much fat in your eating plan, there will be too much adipose fat around your body and no amount of diet or exercise will expose those muscle curves you are after.

Do not look to those bodybuilders who constantly dehydrate themselves to show every ripple in their body. It is a very dangerous practice and not at all realistic.

3 - 4 days a week is the maximum one should train provided the routine is split up into upper body, lower body and cardio. Much more training will become counterproductive, leading to over training.
The body needs to recover in order to grow. The recovery phase is thought to be the growth and strength building phase.

You are young and you have many, many decades of training ahead of you, so take it nice and easy and slowly build it up and you will reap the rewards. Just don't get caught up in all the hype that surrounds just one aspect of body sculpting.

All the best
