Wowly cow!
If 40% of your body mass is fat, you need to start shedding those pounds and fast! The healthy bodyfat limit for men is between 11 and 19%, with an healthy average of 15%. You'd be more fit and lift more weights, too. And your joints might be volatile because of your excess weight. And remember, it's not how MUCH you lift, it's how much you lift in proportion to your own bodyweight. Weighing 290 and lifting the same amount in a bench press (ie.) is totally different than weighing 200pounds and lifting 290.
Anyways, back to the point. Some people are known to get as much as 10 pounds of lean muscle mass a month, without taking steroids. However, that is IF your genes kick ass and you workout like a madman. It might be absolute bollocks, but I suggest that you weigh yourself every morning before eating or drinking and write it down and then observe how the progress is going on a long-term basis, some days you might have more water in your system or more faecies in your gut, so your bodyweight might go up and down like a yoyo.
