Dear VegSource Reader,
You may know that Team VegSource also runs a nonprofit organization called EarthSave International. EarthSave was founded by bestselling author John Robbins.
Today's the last day of the year, and a great day to help give others a happy new year -- by donating to EarthSave.
During 2011, with help from VegSource supporters like you, EarthSave was able to institute its wildly successful Meals For Health program at Sacramento Food Bank & Family Servies. This innovative program dramatically improved the lives of the participants by helping them adopt a healthy vegan diet.

Obesity, diabetes & heart disease: rampant in low income areas
An article in today's Los Angeles Times spotlights the challenges low income communities face. The article contrasts the affluent, largely white city of Manhattan Beach with another Los Angeles city, Bell, which is prodominently Latino and poor.
The affluent white city has a child obesity rate of 4%, while over 36% of kids in the poor Latino city are obese. You can read the full LA Times article here.
Why is obesity such an enormous problem in low income communities?
Clearly, it's the food, it's the access to healthy, inexpensive food, but Meals For Health showed dramatically what the single biggest cause of obesity and sickness is in low income communities -- it's the lack of knowledge about how food choices impact your health.
By educating and giving personal support, Meals For Health got people to go plant-strong...and then the pounds melted, the diseases disappeared.
The information participants received from the Meals For Health team cured the problem, along with the novel Food Coach concept EarthSave pioneered. The problems weren't solve by exercise, or by putting healthier retail stores into low-income areas, or by dropping the price of fruits and veggies available in the area. It was solved by the education and support Meals For Health provided.
Once participants learned and then were convinced by their own experience that going vegan would change their lives, they pursued eating this way with a passion. They found ways to get healthy, inexpensive, whole foods onto their tables. We showed them how they could do it anywhere -- and then they showed us how they did it in their own city.
As the saying goes, where there's a will there's a way; the same is true when it comes to getting access to healthier food. Solid, accurate education and friendly support are the two most important elements to get people healthy -- and this is exactly is what EarthSave provides.
Please make a year-end donation to EarthSave
Very few organizations are successfully taking on health issues in low income communities. None has demonstrated the effectiveness and success that EarthSave's Meals For Health is showing.
The solution for low income people to get healthy -- is the same as for everyone else: change awareness and educate about food, show results and prove it works, and the people will follow. That's because all people want to be healthy.
To date, EarthSave's leadership in helping low-income communities has been made possible by your support.
Please make a generous contribution so EarthSave can continue helping low-income people gain health independence.

Using the Meals For Health program, we are bringing a lot of public attention to the role that a healthy plant-based diet can play to solve our nation's health problems. Please support EarthSave's groundbreaking program.
Love & Peas and Happy New Year!
