I felt that the interveiwer was insulting and tried to make prof Campbell claims a joke. Just I how I saw it...

I don't think Bill Maher was being insulting - he was (unsuccessfully) trying to be funny - it's what he does. I don't think he really 'got' that Dr. Campbell is a scientist interested in discussing a very serious and necessary topic - and so the humor fell flat. Once Bill started asking appropriate questions and got off the jokes, it worked out ok. Of course, it's difficult to have a 5 minute conversation on this topic and have it be complete. Bill is vegetarian, I believe. Does anyone know for sure?

user-pic

Yes, he is a vegetarian - vegan - tho he "VERY occasionally" has some fish. His interview is part of one of the FOK promo clips.

I agree, I don't think Bill was trying to be insulting. Dr. Campbell, very unfortunately, isn't a very good interviewee. He doesn't seem to follow what the interviewer is trying to get out of him. He also (frustratingly) could be much better at elaborating and giving out information. Dr. McDougall or Dr. Fuhrman or Michael Pollan are much better at these short interviews.

As much as I am a fan of Dr. Campbell's work, if I had to choose a spokesperson for veg awareness to go on these shows, it would not be him.

I thought it was EXCELLENT! Yes, they struggled with the jokes a little (but that's Bill's strong point - he slipped out of them graciously - and humorously). You could see he was totally on the doctor's side here, but they were both just getting a feel for each other. They made a TON of good points and the audience LOVED it! Big, big, big stars for Dr. Campbell and for "Forks Over Knives". (By the way, everybody struggles a little with the title. Even the picture on the cover. Honestly, I wouldn't recognize a scalpal if it came up and bit me on the....!) Five stars for Dr. Campbell and for Bill Maher and a great big THANK YOU!

Are you nuts? Rewatch it...and then picture say, Dr. Joel Fuhrman sitting there with Bill...he had an opportunity to really say something 20 million or more people would have heard and he sat there like he had just had a seziure. He needs to retire and the Docs take it from here.

user-pic

(ps - the only time anybody used a scalpal on me, I was UNCONCIOUS!) lol

user-pic

well I dont know Bill's show as I live in the UK, but now I understand it's his humour. I have read Campbells books and can say that its a serious topic, not to be laughed at regardless. If the subject was Iraq or Afghanistan, there'd be no joke im sure, but the state of the health of US citizens? I'd say thats even more serious than ever.

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst interviews that I have seen Dr. Campbell give. He seemed way off his mark, not sharp, and not convincing. I love the man, but feel this may not be the type of format that is best for him to speak in.

user-pic

I must say I agree with Don- I actually felt like Bill Maher was really trying to provide an opportunity for Dr. Campbell to get out his message, but Dr. Campbell just seemed to be on a different wavelength and didn't go with Bill Maher's direction. I imagine Dr. Esselstyn could have been a much better interview.

user-pic

With that said, it still was decent and if people are ripe to hear the message, the message may have gotten across...

I also agree and I just cringe when Dr. Campbell can't get the words out! I love T. Colin Campbell and his work, but it sure would be nice if he had more communication skills under pressure, which is what coming out on TV requires. I wish he would of just said: "Well, Forks over Knives means that with the power of the fork, as in what we eat, we can avoid the knife, in this case, the scalpel that operates millions of Americans in an open-heart surgery...". When asked what he means by “Whole foods”, just mentioning “unrefined fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains and nuts” would have done the trick, but he was vague, unfortunately. And about the confusing nutritional information out there, Bill was setting it up to talk about how industry has a hand in what information people receive, but Dr. Campbell also wasn’t clear... But all in all, some of the message got out there, and millions saw it. So thumbs up.

I have to disagree with some of the above comments.
I don t know if the extremely negative Don and mgalli (neither have posted previously in this forum) were looking at the same video as I was, but I thought Dr. Campbell was able to express himself well and he did an excellent job as far as bringing out issues regarding plant based diets(the great donut example made it clear what whole foods is not), government/big business complicity, lack of nutrition training of doctors, public confusion of nutrition issues, etc..

Maher appeared sympathetic and a few times helped Dr. Campbell make his points.

Thanks to Dr. Campbell and keep up the good work.

Bill Maher is a long-time vegetarian. I thought Dr. Campbell gave a horrendous interview. He seemed out of it. He didn't understand some of the questions. I was embarrassed watching him.

user-pic

How old are you? (Just curious.) I'm guessing you're closer to 20 than you are to 60, right?

user-pic

This was the worst thing I have ever seen. It was actually painful to watch. Dr. Campbell was like an old man that didn't know where he was. He didn't understand even the most basic questions and couldn't even explain the title of the movie, his reason for being there! It was like watching someone you once knew fall victim to severe Alzheimer's Disease. Campbell was clueless and embarrassed himself. He should have deferred this interview to Joel Fuhrman or someone that can talk at the celebrity level. I felt so bad for him...I was crouching in the corner. What a train wreck...poor guy...RETIRE!!!
