The South Dakota Department of Health has issued a consumption advisory for walleye from Newell Lake in Butte County.
Recent testing found that walleye larger than 18 inches from the lake had mercury levels approaching 1 part per million. When that level is reached, meals including the fish should be spaced to prevent potentially dangerous mercury accumulation.
The department recommends that healthy adults eat no more than 7 ounces a week of the walleye under advisory. Children younger than 7 should eat no more than one 4-ounce serving a month. Women who plan to become pregnant, are pregnant or are breastfeeding should have no more than one 7-ounce serving a month.
