Carrie Underwood, longtime vegetarian and animal lover, is engaged to hockey player Mike Fisher of the Ottawa Senators. The couple, who began dating in October 2008, announced their engagement Monday. A wedding date has not been set.
Underwood, 29, grew up on a farm in Oklahoma and her love of animals resulted in the decision to stop eating meat at age 13. "Ever since I was little I loved animals," the country star said. "They depend on people to take care of them. If you told me I could never sing again, I'd say that was horrible, but it's not my life. If you told me I could never be around animals again, I would just die."
The country crooner is featured on the January 2010 cover of Self Magazine and inside she shares her thoughts on eating for energy, keeping a food diary, and enjoying favorite foods in a healthy manner. "If I eat too much before a show, I just want to sit down. Too little, and I'm starving. So I eat something small, like Quorn, a tasty meat-free protein, and green beans."
