The doctors at Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) delivered a fruit basket to Rush Limbaugh who is being monitored at Queen's Medical Center after experiencing chest pains yesterday.

The basket, containing vegetables, fruits, and other vegetarian foods, was accompanied by well wishes and an invitation to join PCRM's 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program which begins on January 1.

PCRM President Neal D. Barnard, MD, wrote to the radio talk show host, "In our grandparents' day, people knew the value of humble beans, vegetables, and fruits, often growing them in their own family gardens. These foods have essentially no cholesterol and very little saturated fat. Nowadays, many Americans are very liberal with meat, dairy products, and end up needing to rely on medications to counteract the effects of their diets."

I think Rush had a panic attack. Chest pains are a common symptom of panic attacks. People think they are having heart attacks, they go to the emergency room, tests are negative, and oftentimes panic disorder becomes the diagnosis of exclusion after everything else is ruled out. Obviously this is a guess on my part, not grounded in anything scientific, having never evaluated Rush in a professional role. But when I see him spewing so much aggression, bitterness, jealousy, hatred, divisiveness and demagoguery, I can't help but see a man who has a tremendous amount of conflict and self-loathing, which is oftentimes the underlying trigger of panic attacks. On some level, conscious or otherwise, he knows his behavior is dishonest and irresponsible (despite whatever truth he may impart to others), but he is unwilling to stop because his ego is being so gratified with the money and attention he has gained and the idolization of his followers. The conflict of knowing what's the right thing to do and not doing it could be the precipitant of his panic attacks/chest pains. Again, this is just a guess on my part. Bottom line: i agree he's better off with a fruit basket rather than a gift assortment of beef byproducts.

I don't like a lot of what he has to say, but if this wakes him up in any way and he starts taking better care of himself, he might moderate his tone a bit. We need a "Rush" of our own!
