People who are vegans or have dairy allergies are limited in the choice of ice cream-like desserts, which are often made from soy. That's one reason why Bay Area chef Daniel Clary, who specializes in raw/vegan cuisine, developed a vegan ice cream. Clients and friends said it was so good they encouraged him to market it.

After 18 months selling it at farmers' markets, the cashew- and coconut milk-based Alkemie Ice Cream is just hitting Whole Foods' freezers. Its mouthfeel is similar to ice cream; the coconut flavor comes through, but The Chronicle Food & Wine staff gave it a thumbs up as a non-dairy product.

Alkemie Gourmet Ice Cream, in vanilla bean, dark chocolate and mint chocolate chip, is $5.99/pint at Bay Area Whole Foods Markets.
