Four years ago, my brother-in-law, Tom Vance, weighed 361 pounds, had high blood pressure and sleep apnea and was miserable from a divorce. He's since used hiking at Bay Area parks to help turn his life around, including losing 115 pounds, and he has also remarried.
"I wanted my life back," Vance said, voicing the sentiments of many people who are out of shape.
At San Pedro Valley County Park in Pacifica this week, Vance relished his reinvention of himself. He hiked with his new wife, Susan, up to a towering rock outcrop, a climb of about 800 feet over 2.5 miles, and then soaked in the gorgeous coastal view. An adventure like this was impossible for him just two years ago.
The transformation started, he said, by losing weight and hiking a few times a week at Bay Area parks.
