Well, c'mon down, Clary. We love it. Have lived here twice in my life. MDH is a genuine cracker. Don't know why I even left the first time. Cheap is a relative word. We live on Anna Maria Island...and you can find 1 story rental houses (more appropriately cottages) for about $1000 a month, which was what I was paying up north for junk apartments. With no view. If you're interested in buying, there are still some deals to be had...we used a realtor cuz we didn't know the area. Bradenton is definitely the cheaper part of town, but it is also the crime center of the area. A new part of town, Lakewood Ranch has all the young families and new resources...as they carve more and more of Everglades and central part of the state. Coulda shoulda woulda on buying years ago for all of us. But we feel we really lucked out. The vacant postage stamp piece of land behind us is now on the market for twice what we paid for house 3 years ago. That with hurricanes, global warming warnings and all. Don't know what your needs are, but I still feel like I'm on vacation. We are pretty isolated here, but just an hour from the Tampa airport where we fly out of for our business trips. The neat thing is we are about 20-30 min. from the nearest hospital, so most of the folks here are pretty healthy. The nearest (good) healthfood store is about 20 minutes away...wish that were closer. Sarasota, with Whole Foods, is the health mecca of the area. Though Tampa is getting better, too. I teach low-fat vegan cooking classes for The Cancer Project here on the island and in Bradenton, and we have a great turnout. Folks are around, but it tends to be a transient community, and you really have to find your affinity groups. Because we travel for work a lot, and the place is pretty deserted in the off season, we aren't as connected to the community in other ways. No buildings are higher than 3 stories, and it is very "old Florida." We love that part. We also go sailing on our small boat a lot, and there's no better place for that. Hope this helps. Good luck!
