I just have one question: Why aren't the cattlemen suing U.S. News & World Report? In a summer or fall issue of 1997, there was an entire article about additives to cattle feed which includes chicken manure and euthanized cats and dogs. I wasn't a big meat eater anyway, but that did it for me. If they want to overcome the bad press, why don't they just clean up their act?
Maryland

I love beef and I think most vegetarians are a little wacky BUT this is the United States and Oprah was well within her rights to say what she did. I will be eating less beef in protest of this silly thing.
North Carolina

Oprah, on May 23, 1996, my family buried my beautiful mother, Mary. She died of Mad Cow Disease. My mother has NEVER EVER EVER been out of the country.  She contracted this horrible disease in either Pennsylvania or New Jersey while eating beef of some sort in a restaurant.  In one of the last hospitals that my mother was in, a doctor told us that he knew of almost 70 cases of the disease popping up in the Pennsylvania area. These idiot beef handlers, the FDA, and others clam up so as not to create hysteria. Oprah, My mother was the most beautiful woman and was reduced to an emacited VICTIM. Your comments on your show were to kind to those people. Mad Cow is here in the U.S. however THEY will never talk.

We should be suing them. If you would be in need of a witness I would be more than willing to hand over medical records. My mother died of Mad Cow Disease in Pennsylvania, plain and simple. Those *ssholes don't deserve a dime of your money. They should pay the bills that my father incurred over the two year period, (they were astronomical). As a matter of fact, they don't have enough money to pay for the loss of my mother.
Pennsylvania

Cattlemen:  It is absurd to believe that any one person could possibly effect the entire cattle industry. I'm an avid beef eater, and it doesn't matter what anyone on tv or radio says. I am also an adult! Any adult will take responsibility for their own actions and thoughts.  If you believe Oprah and a so-called expert are going to change the way other people think, then you probable think suing is the answer to all your problems. Instead of acting like adults and explaining the procedures that are involved, you retaliated by being childish and demanding money. It's a shame that in this day and age some people still don't understand the freedom of opinion.

Like or not mad cow came. Hey, it scared a lot of people whitless. However, those of us who continued to eat beef had faith in the abilities of hard working Americans to solve the problem. It's beginning to look like our faith in the industry was misplace!   You've done more harm than good with your "witch burning" tactics.   It is my feverent hope that this wasteful, ridiculous trial ends shortly.  The "cattlemen" need to stop acting like wayward adolescents who didn't get their new toy of the year, and start acting like adults.
Chicago

Your Honor, I pray you will find the defendants guilty of food disparagement.   That is the best hope of protecting other Americans from a similar fate. This case must go to the Supreme Court if we are to overturn "fruit suits" and preserve free speech in America.

Look at what this wrongful litigation is costing. Oprah has the resources to fight. The rest of us don't. Any American could will end up being intimidated and victimized by an industry that has assumed "super citizen" status by "buying" legislation that would have our founding fathers rolling in their graves. Our founding fathers never envisioned corporations having more rights and privilages than patriots.   Oprah and Howard may have headed off a "Mad Cow" crisis in the U.S.   In my mind, America has already won.

A guilty verdict (though wildly unpopular with uninformed Americans) would hopefully lead to a Supreme Court victory -- the best hope others will not be victimized.
New Jersey

Dear Oprah. We love you no matter what. Thanks for coming to Amarillo. Thanks for saying what you think.
Amarillo

Dear Cactus Feeders:  I think that a human form of "mad cow" disease has been in the US for a long time already, and you guys are trying to silence anyone who dares speak up. The US public is not with you on this one guys. You picked the wrong fight. You should concentrate you efforts on cleaning up the mess to our environment that cattle ranching has created.
New Ashford, MA

dear oprah, we believe very strongly in your right to free speech! my govt students and i held a demonstration in front of the college to support your right. we sent video and copies of the newspaper story to your chicago studio. we are also engaged in a nationwide letter-writing campaign to support free speech in the oprah winfrey case and have asked people to refrain from eating beef until the "cattlemen" drop their suit and apologize to you. we also did a rap called "cattleman, where's da beef", the video of which is still being edited.

the main reason i'm writing to inform you about the NOVA program on PBS which aired Tues. Feb 10th. on Mad Cow Disease. It was excellent! It would be good for you if your attorney could enter it into evidence and let the judge and jury see it!  good luck! we're fighting for you in albany, georgia and across the country!
Atlanta

Cattle ranchers, I could care less about Oprah Winfrey or her show. I do think that your suit is unreasonable and on that basis I will no longer eat beef.

Lets support reasonable responsible business people in this country!
Rhode Island

Farmers are an amazing breed. They have done much to further our country. Farmers are also amazingly ignorant of the consequences of many of their practices. Whether it be a prion (protein
particle thought to be involved w/transmission of mad cow disease) or E. coli the bacterial "contaminant" in many meats, we are very susceptible to disease and/or death from these agents. I am sorry for the difficulties your show has caused you, but I really believe that you had the right to express your feelings on such a matter. I wish that I had more time to gather hard facts to assist with your trial. Science is definitely in your corner. I hope you are not taking the trial personally and I hope you have some lawyers with solid science backgrounds who can support the self-evident truths that were brought up on your show.
Washington State

Hi Oprah: I enjoy your show, watch it everyday if possible. You are doing a great job helping people. God is on your side. I can't believe the cattleman association are so small minded in texas. I can't believe you don't have a right to say what you feel and want to eat. You are an angel and the cattlemen are jealous of your good work. Keep up the good work.
British Colombia

I have lived in the US for 20 years now, and what really baffles me is that some one can say sick, negative things to the USA's President and that person won't get sued for 10.3 Million dollars. But, when someone come along, who happens to be an excellent talk-show hostess, told the people of her personal taste against beef, Wham! She got sued for 10.3 million dollars.

It's her body; she has the right to say if beef is bad for her. If the market on beef was down, it was because people made their own choices. Oprah did not force any one not to eat beef...Please, please, you plaintiffs, don't let greed replace the humane side of you!   Oprah & Howard, I admire your courage to show the truth. I stand for you, and I pray that God's justice will be upon you both!
Arizona

I did not see the TV show over which the current bruhaha is raised. It seems to me, however, that you have uncovered a real hazard in our food chain, and I congratulate you for it.

I am concerned about reports of E. Coli in Burger King products, and Jack In The Box products. McDonalds' products probably are suspect, too. Meat handling must be careless and slipshod.

Mad Cow Disease is another whole issue. I do not understand the causes or effects. It seems, though, that meat producers are trying to economize at the public's expense by feeding meat products to cows.
Daly City, California

I think this lawsuit is disgusting. If a lawsuit results each and every time someone voices an opinion, then we all loose. Freedom of speech and freedom of choice is the premise on which this country was founded. One step forward, fourty steps back? Lets hope not!

No one holds a gun to our heads forcing us to eat or not to eat something. People will do as they wish. Your program helps educate us so that we may make choices with our eyes open, instead of blindly.

Quite frankly, this lawsuit makes the cattle industry look like a bunch of sniveling cry babies. I will definatley boycott beef from this point on and I will likewise, encourage everyone I know to do the same.

Oprah, I applaud your efforts and encourage you to keep up the good work. There are many, many people behind you.
San Jose, California

Oprah, You know you have millions of people who support you. Think about the fact that "this too shall pass." You know milestones are a part of life forever, never something one grows out of. That is how the Lord reminds us to seek His strength and guidance and salvation. You are universally in prayer.
Kentucky

Dear Judge: Figure out what the real reason for this whole trial is and judge accordingly. If it has anything to do with Oprah being Oprah then it sounds like it is a personal problem between cattle farmers and her.  Oprah believes too strongly in helping other people and no amount of a trial will deter her away from that.
Mississippi

Everyone has a right to express their opinion about anything they think may or may not harm or disgust us. Beef is well known to be harmful to the body and digestive system. Heart patients are discouraged against eating red meat. Why? Duh. . .it's not good for you. It's full of chemicals and the cattle are not fed, killed or dressed properly. The slaughter system in this country leaves a lot to be desired. I was raised eating fresh meat. Chickens were killed for dinner and served fresh! Beef and venison was fresh. No feces were allowed to contaminate the meat. Why can't they do that now? This is my opinion and I have a right to it. Don't like it? Sue me.
Huntsville, Tx

Dear Oprah--Please know that millions of us are out here, standing behind you and your right to free speech in this country. Please continue to stand up for your rights...the cattlemen are paranoid of the truth because of its potential to strip them of their mult-billion dollar profits. It's obvious that they care absolutely nothing for the animals that they raise, only to kill for profits, nor for the people who will eat the meat they place on the market, chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, etc. (Yuk!)--Stand firm! We are with you!
Denver

Keep speaking the truth, Howard, because those cattlemen are only showing what fools they really are...You couldn't wish for a more visible arena from which to speak out! We hear you! We're with you!!!!!
Idaho

To all of you cattle ranchers, who can't seem to tolerate having someone speak the truth, since it may deplete the profits you've been earning through the blood and suffering of innocent, helpless animals--This is the United States of America, and every American has the Constitutional right
to speak freely....the majority of Americans are cheering on Oprah, as you publicly show the world the selfish, bullying cowards that you really are!!!!!
Vermont

Dear Oprah, I hope this lawsuit will end shortly . I watched the show in discussion and you did not sway me one way or the other regarding eating beef. I think you left that decesion up to your veiwers. I truly enjoy your  show and find it very informative, please keep up the good work
Clarksville Tn.

Cactus Feeders: Ya'll make Texans look like a bunch of hicks to the rest of the world. Ya'll look like spoiled kids with this lawsuit. I saw that show. I already had heard the practice of rendering cattle, etc. into the feed. You know, Britian tried that and see what happened to them. I'm not against the beef industry--my uncles raised cattle, goats, sheep. They were hard working people who I loved and respected. But, they also practiced Biblical principles--their herds were fed GRAIN and what was in the pasture. They weren't fed ground up herbivores. That turns cattle into cannibals. And opens the door for diseases. Weber said on that show that the cattle wasn't simply vegetarian because they drink milk. All babies (and even overgrown calves) drink milk when they are young. The whole point is God gave those animals a specific diet and some dunce tampered with it to make more money. What has happened to free speech? This is suppose to be America.
Chandler, Texas

Dear Howard, I want you to know that since I heard you speak last July I have been eating vegetarian style (except for eggs). Red meat had almost gone from my diet anyway, but after that night I gave up chicken and fish, even those scrumptious prawns sauteed in garlic, olive oil and white wine.

About this trial, I think it is a lose-lose situation for the plaintiff. To me, it's not only about the meat issue; it also about whether the rich and powerful can continue to use the law and media to try to snow the rest of us. I believe that the innate goodnes of human nature will win out, as it has slowly in history. Thank you, Howard, for all your efforts to help people be healthier through better diets, and for reducing animal cruelty in the process. You are making a difference.
Burnaby, BC, Canada

Cattlemen: Just wanted to tell you that you should check out the poll on the Oprah line....you boy's are way behind!!!! 855 projected you will win and 7450 projected Oprah and Howard would win!!!!! In my opinion, you were grandstanding and it backfired on you. Well, if our justice system works you and I know what will happen. I just hope Oprah and Howard sue you for harassment, because in my opinion that is what you are doing.
Austin, Texas

Oprah, you you are a good example of integrity and courage in your work. DO know, that more people than you think support you and this cause (it might not be so obvious in Texas!). Hang in there, keep up with the good work and ask if you need anything, you will be amazed how many people are waiting in the background to join in the good work.
Oregon

Oprah, we're praying for you daily!!  "Our forefathers would be proud!!! What you're doing makes us proud!"

You go, girl!!!!!
Detroit

Ooprah, I can't believe this whole law suit. Those guys are blaming you for their poor business sense.  Keep the faith Oprah!
Arkansas

Hallo OPASH,[as we call you in our kenyan slang].  I am writing to extend to you and mr.Howard total support at this time of the trial on behalf  of all Kenyans living in the United States and Motherland. We believe this trial is all political and meant to intimidate those who believe in nothing but the truth."The Truth shall set you free" whether they like it or not.  All residing in America have the right to know that which appertains to their lifes.  It's my prayer the Jury will defend that precious "First Amendment" that America is famous for and which exist only theoritically in many countries including mine.GOD Bless America and Oprah.  Mahalo.
New York

I'm writing to express my disgust that the plaintiffs in this trial think the public isn't intelligent enough to think for themselves. If Oprah jumps off a bridge, do they really expect us to follow? As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter who you are, you have a right to express your opinion, and people are responsible for their own actions. If some people got information from her show that convinced them that eating beef was not for them, then that's certainly their own business.

You may be surprised to find that I'm a cattle rancher in Wyoming. I've been a big fan of Oprah's for many years, but I truly do not feel biased. We all have a responsibility to evaluate the information we receive and act accordingly.
Wyoming

Dear Cattlemen: I, like, I expect, other admirers of Oprah Winfrey, pride myself on being able to make decisions for myself. Being a well educated (holding two master's degrees) middle aged person, I am not easily influenced by casual comments people make on television.

Though I did not see the program wherein your membership alleges that Oprah maligned your product, causing loss of revenues, I now feel repulsed each time I consider eating beef products simply because of the way you are treating a beloved and well respected philanthropist, who seems to live to help others. I will not be buying any beef for quite a while because I think you are a bunch of whining ne'r-do-wells without any morals, and do not deserve my money after the way you have treated Oprah. I'll eat chicken and fish and be happy to have it!
Florida

Dear Oprah,  I think that this case is ridiculous! I have not seen the show, and to tell you the truth, how many people do you think saw that particular one?! I sometimes watch your show, and I think that is what most people do (the exception being die-hard fans). I have trouble believing that so many people watched that particular show that the beef industry plummeted... all because you said that Lyman's comments "stopped you cold from ever eating another burger?" Most importantly, I recall that at the time your show is said to have aired, there was a craze going on here over the Mad Cow incidences in England. I knew people who actually DID NOT BUY BEEF simply because of what was happening in England. You had absolutely nothing to do with it! This trial is absurd -- the beef industry took a fall and decided to play a quick game of "find the scapegoat."
Wisconsin

Cactus Feeders: I will be eatting less burgers because you are mean to Oprah! She has done such good in the world I truly believe the Lord will punish all of you.
Miami, FL

People were afraid of Mad Cow disease. Oprah, as a messenger, informed us all of what is going on. The government needs to inform us and not wait until someone may or may not get a disease of some sort. I believe we have a right to know. I don't want the cattle ranchers to get Oprah's hard earned money. There are alot of people in America who enjoy a great steak or hamburger...that's American.  All I want for America is for the citizens to be informed, make their own choices and pray that the lesson learned from all of us is a positive one. I do not like this personal attack on Oprah. The meat industry should attack Mad Cow disease, period.
Utah

Cactus Feeders, scr*w you! All Oprah was let people know about a possible health problem, much more than you would I'm sure!!!!!. Like you need the money you claim you lost, look around guys people are homless and dying of AIDS put your money to a better use! Besides we're all capeable to make our own decisions about what we eat.
Oklahoma

Mr. Lyman: In the midst of chaos is it possible to remain calm?  Yes!  You're doing wonderfully!
Keep it up! You're awesome!

Oprah: We're all praying for you dear!  You're doing a marvelous job!  You're AMAZING! Keep it up!

Cattlemen: Just a little advice: If you're so concerned about cattle futures, don't act so erroneously.
The American public scoffs at your immature actions. Please take the time to think about what you're doing.
Washington D.C.

Dear Mr. Lyman, I heard you speak on the AM radio show a couple of years back, and still remember it. What you said stuck in my head and after seeing on the news about mad cow, e coli, etc. and most of all feeling more unhealthy than I felt I should at 25, I have recently (for last 8 mos) become a vegetarian. I feel that what you said did influence me somehow if only for the fact that I remembered you from an Iowa radio station show where you showed your honesty and at times a humorous way of stating your beliefs, but it was not an influence for me to stop eating meat.

Oprah did not influence me to become vegetarian either, but I appreciate hearing different opinions such as those appearing in her forum. My decision to become vegetarian was due to my OWN concerns for health relying upon many sources for information.  The beef industry is trying to win money/publicity from you and Ms. Winfrey on the basis of influence. How wrong can they be???  I am living, healthy proof.
Iowa

Just want to say how MUCH I appreciate and support Oprah, as well as Howard Lyman, in this suit by the Cattleman's Association. I think the Cattlemen Assoc. are ridiculous and way out of line, in trying to silence her. I really appreciate the way she's handled herself, and admire her courage and
that of her sponsors. She's great, so's her show. Thanks for your courage.
Little Rock, Ark.

To Oprah: I imagine it would have been a lot easier to settle out of court and just get on with what you are doing so well. By not doing so, you defending our Constitutional right to free speech. I am most grateful to you for doing so.
New York

Oprah,
Our thoughts are with you,
May you suceed in all your endeavors.
Never stop doing good for all people.
We love you!
Texas

Dear Judge Robinson, I heard representatives of the cattlemens association complaining about drops in beef prices that they attribute to Oprah Winfrey. My question is what exactly are these cattlemen doing to make sure that beef cattle are not fed using animal products associated with the spread of mad cow disease? Why are they shooting the messenger when it is their own behavior that should be in question? Where is equitable estoppel here, anyway?
Chicago, IL

Cattlemen: It's always better to be on the safe side, people before profits, how would you like it if your children were dying from a mind wasting disease? You shouldn't assure beef consumers, because you CAN'T be certain it won't cause CJD.
United Kingdom

I wanted to write you and tell you my mother and I love you and your show. I want you to know you've made a difference in my life sense I've started watching your shows. You put on subject matter that is helpful, educational, and informative. For this I want to say I'm sarry for what your going through. If I had children I would make it part of there home schooling to watch your show & write reports on them as to what they get out of it. I feel you help instill back in the public to reimpliment family values, being a good neighbor, giving back to the community.etc... Unlike other shows I use to watch were you can see the host is just being politically correct or rolling their eyes at what guests are saying, You bring a feeling of a friend telling you a story, bring you new, or the such. As a viewer I can feel, and sense of enthusuim for the subject you have on.

As far as the lawsuit goes, I think its bull. You clearly stated at the beginning of the show who your guest were and that all of them were not experts. I found it and educational show. These people pushing the suite are basically saying that the public can't make an informed decision. That we just all blindly follow whatever the last person said to us, until the next person catches our brain cells and pushes them in another direction.  Well just know that I support you and your show. Hope shortly you can end you long days and be back to you normal life.
St. Louis

Good luck to you, Oprah. We quit eating meat last year. Both my husband and I lost 40 pounds each. Easiest weight I ever lost. I don't miss eating meat AT ALL! My husband (56 year-old Afro-American) has a cholesteral level of 136--no heart attacks for him.

I don't eat beef because it is full of fat and isn't good for you. It cloggs your arteries. Maybe the cattlemen should visit a cardio unit some time.

I liken you to the early years when people started speaking out against the tobacco industry. Fight on!!!
Michigan

Oprah, I just wanted to tell you that because of this violation to your freedom of speech, and the stupid and cruel things the cattle industry are saying about you, I've decided, and am convincing my friends and family, not to eat any beef in protest. As of the day this stupid trial started I have not and will not eat beef. I can't believe that these idiotic people are doing this to you after all the things you've done for the people in this country. And the 10 million they say you cost them, well, having your show in A., Texas is probably giving OVER 10 million to the states economy due to the hotels and food all the press are eating, not to mention the people coming to Texas to see your show, and
the money you're paying out for that little theater.....I just think this whole this is wrong, and I hope you not only win, but I hope the jury decides the Cattle Industry should pay YOU!!! And make a formal apology. Good luck Oprah, I'll be thinking of you and praying. I know this must be getting so upsetting by now.
Iowa

Oprah, Great job on the stand yesterday. Keep up the fight and lets show the world that unreasonable greedy people never win!
Pittsfield, Massachusetts

Dear Judge Robinson, I just wanted you know, My mother died of Mad cow Disease on May 23, 1996. She was never ever out of the United States. Many people who are diagnosed with Alzhiemer's actually are dying from Mad Cow Disease or Jacob Crutzfeld Disease. This lawsuit should be thrown out of court. They are the ones who should be on trial. I lost my mother from this
horrible disease and Oprah's comments on her show were actually too kind.
North Carolina

Cattlemen, For those of us whom really enjoy a great steak now and then, could you please quit spending valuable time in court and get back to what truly matters. This is a country of free enterprise and free speech. As a consumer I freely trust you to have my family's best interest at heart
and know feel betrayed that the cost for this trust is a bigger amount of yuk in our intestinal trackeds. I believe that beef can be of benefit to our bodies but until I see more care and viable proof that business practices will be changed, my family will stop consuming these products all-together. I realize that we are only one family and as little beef as we eat will not effect your pocket book. My main concern ,however, is not your world but that of ours which has been greatly influenced in
a positive way by honest living and Oprah's good will to all.

Please take the time to clean up the processing of what you are responsible for putting out on the market. (while your at it take a good look inside instead of looking for someone else to blame.)
CLEAN IT UP, YOURSELVES!!!
New Mexico

Oprah: You are a real heroine for standing up to the cattlemen. They are trying to use their clout and money to silence anyone who dares tell the truth. I admire you for taking your show to Texas, and following through on what is right, rather than taking the easy way out. I can't say I am a regular watcher of your show. I am usually at work when you are on. But I can say I am a regular admirer. You are a great inspiration to the world for this. I wish you all the best!
Ohio

Oprah - Thank you for speaking out about the atrocities of beef farming in this world. I must admit,
though, that even if you had said that beef was great, I'd still think that you were expressing your opinion and that is legal in this country. In this case, I think that you were right. Most of us do. Hang in there...
Nebraska

Thank You Oprah for standing up for the rights of the right to eat healthy. I think this case against you is crazy. People should be free to express their opinions on what they want to put in their bodies and what they don't want to. The cattle industry should be sued for promoting a product that is not good for people.  Your good intentions are appreciated and keep up the great work.
Roseburg, OR

Judge Robinson: How did this case ever make it to court. Since when is it illegal to express one's opinion. It's not like Oprah's actions incited a riot.  She merely offered a comment after receiving some very convincing  information about a product.

I am by no means a vegetarian. My family consumes hamburger and other beef products on a regular basis. The information I receive through the media helps me make informed decisons. Did I stop buying hamburger because of Oprah's opinion, NO!? But do I now take more precautions
when I'm choosing my product? Yes!

I hope you keep in mind that one of the basic liberties of this country is being threatened by this lawsuit.
Lincolnton, NC
