John Davis was a pioneer of vegetarianism on the internet from the first days of the world wide web in 1994. He maintained the first websites for VSUK, VIVA and EVU as well being involved with many others in the mid-90s, and he built the first IVU website in November 1995. In 2006, after many years of working for IVU, he was designated as IVU Manager. The last few years have seen some major reorganisations to enable IVU to maintain its leading role in world vegetarianism into the 21st century, including improvements in financial and business links. He is particularly proud to have had the opportunity to support the first vegetarian congresses ever to be held in Africa, thanks to funds raised by IVU. Throughout this time he has also been researching the history of IVU, partly for presentations at the centenary congress in 2008, along with general vegetarian history, all supported by members of the ivu-history email group. The results of this now run to about 10,000 historical files on the IVU website. In September 2010 he was coopted as a Trustee (member of the board of directors) of the Vegetarian Society UK, with a particular brief on history, international affairs and the internet. Over the years with IVU John has attended congresses and other events in many countries, including Australia, Brazil, California, China, Dubai (UAE), Germany, India, Italy, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand. He lives in rural England.

Vegan Views - the interview

John Davis | November 28, 12 at 12:10 AM | International

A few months back, the editor of Vegan Views magazine (a member of IVU) asked me if I’d like to do an interview about my blogs, and the e-book compilation of them: ‘World Veganism – past, present and future’. I...

Blog of blogs

John Davis | November 7, 12 at 12:04 AM | International

I’ve been posting these blogs for almost three years now, putting up one a week on all sorts of things. The stats show some getting ten times more hits than others – but of course that doesn’t tell me how many people actually read them...

The Future of the Movement?

John Davis | October 31, 12 at 12:00 AM | International

Two years ago I wrote these thoughts about where we’re going in promoting veg*ism worldwide – not necessarily what I think should happen, just what it appeared was already happening. I’ve updated a couple of minor points, otherwise it still...

Brighton - veg capital UK?

John Davis | October 24, 12 at 12:00 AM | International

For about the last 20 years I've bought my shoes from 'Vegetarian Shoes' in Brighton, a small city on the south coast of England. It was developed by the Victorians as a seaside escape from London, and now has about...

Throwing the lion to the Christians - Veg*ism and Religion

John Davis | September 26, 12 at 12:01 AM | International

I have absolutely no religious inclinations at all - which might have made me an odd choice for a speaker at a conference of the Christian Vegetarian Association UK (CVAUK) back in August 2010. As IVU Manager, I try to treat...

East Meets West and West Eats Meat - Veg*ism and Music

John Davis | September 19, 12 at 12:00 AM | Celebrities, International

[updated for 2012] As a musician myself, I had often noticed that there seemed to be a lot of other veg musicians around. So a couple of years ago I did some historical research and put the results online. I...

John Davis | September 12, 12 at 12:39 AM | International

Go Veg - and see the World!

John Davis | September 5, 12 at 12:01 AM | International

[updated September 2012] The main reason for the creation of the International Vegetarian Union, way back in 1908, was simply to help veg*ns in different countries communicate with each other.  This was done mostly by exchanging newsletters, journals and personal...

John Davis | August 29, 12 at 12:01 AM | Green

The title is an old English proverb, subject to endless debates about what any of it means (try googling it). I wrote some of this at the end of May 2010 – and as the May blossom and the month...
