Losing
Weight
I've been on many different types of diets over the
course of my life. I'm not obese, but I've always had
a few (or more) pounds to lose. I've only been vegan
for a month, but I didn't start it as a fad diet to
lose weight, even though most of my omnivore family
and friends think I did and keep hoping it's something
I'll "get over." I began veganism quite by accident.
This may sound odd, because I know the vast majority
of vegans have very strong, heartfelt reasons for becoming
vegan. Now that my heart has been freed to feel since
my conversion, I have found these reasons, too. However,
I became vegan through a very slow process of trying
to feed myself and my family healthier meals and teaching
my two young toddlers what healthy eating is from the
ground up.
I've read many books on so-called healthy diets. I've
weeded through the cabbage soup, grapefruit, and low-carb
insanities. Luckily, I found some really good books
-- books that made a LOT of sense, and they all seemed
to pinnacle with the same idea: quit eating meat and
meat by-products. The more I read and cross-referenced,
the more it all made sense. Of course, after reading
all these books, I began a slow process of change that
started with cutting out saturated fats and hydrogenated
oils. Next I began adding in essential fatty acids.
Then I heard about all the benefits of soy in the diet.
I found that the more soy "meats" I exchanged, the less
I wanted to eat "real" meats. Eventually, I asked myself
why I was eating meat all, when it was chock-full of
antibiotics, hormones, and who knows what else. Once
I finished reading various resources about the countless
people who had recovered from cancer and other diseases
by cutting out meat and eating more whole foods, I finally
obliterated the meat.
What have I gotten out of all this? I know I'm eating
the healthiest possible diet I can, so I finally quit
worrying about my weight for the first time in my entire
life. Not only do I feel wonderful, I've lost six pounds
without trying! Furthermore, I have a freer [healthier]
heart that allows me to give my full love to these deserving
animals that I've always felt guilty about eating. It
is my sincere wish for the entire world to become so
enlightened.
