Addictions
Being vegan/vegetarian requires some sort of addiction. We need to be addicted to our feelings and motivation. We all know that for most people, getting started as a new vegan/vegetarian can be trying. It's hard to give up those foods we've been eating all our lives without a second thought. It's probably fair to say that a few of us have strayed from the path on the way as well. What makes us come back? An addiction to our cause!
It's not only about our feelings, it's about the foods we eat. How many times have we been through a "food phase" where all we wanted for dinner every night for a week was our favorite vegan meal? Or maybe we craved that delicious vegan dessert after a healthy meal. Either way, really enjoying our meals reinforces how much we enjoy being vegan/vegetarian. I've personally been addicted to collecting recipes off of the Web and from books that I know I'll love. All the variety makes me confident I'll be satisfied. I have enough now to make a new meal every night for a year!
Being addicted to learning is great too. With all the books and Web sites available, we can become addicted to reading up on our lifestyle. The information we have access to nowadays can really help us to keep motivated and be ready for anything. Posting on message boards can be addictive too, because we can meet a bunch of great people who are in the same boat and are ready to support us.
Many people would look at the word "addiction" in a negative way, but there are plenty of good addictions, too. I'm addicted to being vegan, and it's probably the best addiction I could ever have!
