Holidays
Drinking hot cider in front of a fire. Hugging a sibling
whom you have not seen in a long time. Decorating the
house in all the warmth and coziness one could want
when it is cold out. Walking outside in the brisk weather;
returning to hot chocolate and a slice of cake. Welcoming
friends and relatives to your house. Searching for days
to find that one perfect gift for someone you love;
finding it. Volunteering some extra time in a soup kitchen
or shelter. Hours spent in the kitchen with your mother.
All your loved ones sitting around a full table, talking,
laughing, and loving.
The dead carcass in the middle of that same table.
The inevitable strife that being around your family
brings. Missing those who can not be there. Endless
social engagements. Wishing you had someone to stand
underneath that mistletoe with. Taking decorations down.
Trying to find a gift, any gift! Getting your credit
card bill. Realizing that another year has passed, and
there is still no peace in the world, or justice, or
fairness; people still suffer.
The holiday season can be both the happiest and the
saddest time of the year. When the factor of being vegan
is thrown in, it can create barriers between people.
Perhaps upon re-reading the first paragraph, or by writing
your own, it can be more of the season it is intended
to be.
