Is Bulk Nutritional Yeast Vegan?
I would like to know if all nutritional yeast brands are suitable for vegans. From my experience, often the bulk bins that contain nutritional yeast do not state the manufacturer or other important information.
In the United States, nutritional yeast in the bulk bins is usually (but not always) Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula -- the ideal nutritional yeast for vegans -- which is fortified with vitamin B12. However, some packaged brands (such as Twinlab) contain additives, such as whey and/or honey. In addition, not all brands of nutritional yeast contain B12 or taste good, so they are not always suitable to use in recipes.
KAL domestic nutritional yeast is Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula repackaged. You can find it in the yellow canisters at your natural food store in the supplement section. If you are not sure what is in the bulk bins at your store, look for the KAL brand (but only the domestic one, as the imported one is not Vegetarian Support Formula).
