In Support of Humane Farming: A Letter to Jo
Hi Jo,
I was pleased with your response to the question of whether vegans should support humane farming. I have done so for many years, even while I was an omnivore (I am a rather recent vegan convert). It is always tempting, especially for new converts, either to distance ourselves from the combat for the ethical treatment of all creatures or to become rather belligerent anti-animal-product proselytizers who antagonize the very people we would like to influence.
One of the best ways I have found to influence my meat-eating friends is by my example. To that end I continue to support humane farming even though I deplore the continued use of animals to satisfy our misguided notions of necessity. I agree that universal veganism or even vegetarianism is utopian. However, this does not mean that we who believe in the protection of all creatures should abandon our efforts.
