Compassion Through Example: An Open Letter to Jo
Dear Jo,
What a wonderful website! I share your opinions on vegan ethics exactly. Most of what I have read by other vegans is condemning of meat-eaters, and it is delightful to finally discover another person who is not so angry. If we as vegans ever hope to be respected, we must respect even those who do not share our beliefs, because, as you have said, anger will lead to anger.
I am not an activist in the strict meaning of the word. I seek to educate and enlighten by example. I work in the Emergency Room of a fairly large hospital, and I often see the cruelty we are capable of among ourselves. I find it ironic that my coworkers can be so compassionate at work, but not see the cruelty we inflict on animals every day. Perhaps someday they will adopt a philosophy of compassion for ALL life.
