I realize this is an older thread, but I just wanted to toss my 2 cents out there anyhow. In ohio you have a choice of 3 options: Personally, having a teacher look at the portfolio and sending their assurance that the student is up to date sounds best to me. There are a few groups that list local assessors who even help you discover what the benchmarks are. Lastly, there are the Ohio Academic Content Standards - at the ohio department of EDU - that you can download for each grade level. It specificially outlines what children in each grade need to know. Our family uses this as a loose outline when we are planning for the years and preparing portfolios at the end of the year so we know if we have covered most of what is 'standard'.

You can have your children take a standardized test
You can have any certified teacher review your portfolio and send a narrative to the school district or if the superintendent agrees - you can review the portfolio and send your narrative into the superintendent
