I began home schooling my 6th grader last year and felt overwhelmed about what to do to keep her up to "code" with the school system so she didn't fall behind. Well we went with a program that covered all 5/6 academic subjects, and she had to do 3-4 pages of each subject daily-it was a bit overwhelming. Well as this (school)year came upon us, we changed our approach. She goes outside of our home and joins other home school kids for her biology (yes, this isn't given to students in school til like 10th grade) class 1X/week for 1 1/2 hours week, and she does Am. History III presidents 1X/week for 1 1/2 hours every other week-they get lots of work to do on their own, and she enjoys this very much. For her LA and Math we went with Time-4-Learning, an online program that is interactive, and she works this at her own pace, but pretty regular with it-and not by any major nagging on my part, which I love big time. I find that her attitude is much more relaxed and she is learning a whole lot more than with the prepackaged workbooks that we thought was best last year. So am I practicing traditional home schooling or radical schooling or relaxed schooling? Whatever we are doing, it is working and she is learning a whole lot more without all the disruptions from public schools where the kids are more into what they are wearing than what they are learning! Also this schedule allows her to learn other vital life lessons, such as making $$ and budgeting her finances and being very responsible for her own future! Best thing we ever did!
