Subject:         Interested in Unschooling - How Do I Convince My Parents?
Date: November 25, 2007 at 9:11 pm PST

Hi! My name is Aidan Sullivan, and I am a 16 year old high school student in Minnesota. I came across The Teenage Liberation Handbook at the radical bookstore where I work, and read it cover to cover during my shift. I am thrilled by this concept - it is exactly how I have been feeling for the past four years about my education. I feel suffocated and untrusted being locked in a building for six and a half hours with a thousand teenagers who I have little in common with. My previous 3.8 GPA has slipped to somewhere around a 2.9 because of my utter distaste and boredom in class. This is not to say that I am not intelligent - I am just not thrilled to learn anymore.

I digress. I believe that Unschooling is the right thing for me - I've even figured out an entire new curriculum for myself based off Brazil, should I ever get the chance to unschool myself. Unfortunately, I know that my conservative-leaning parents will not get behind this - my mother is a teacher in the district I am in, and I know that they will think this idea flighty, think me a dropout instead of someone sacrificing socially-mandated higher learning for happiness and life education.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how to approach this subject with my parents. Any advice helps!

Thank you so much!
- Aidan.
