Just wanted to comment on your question. I have successfully unschooled 2 high schoolers(both boys) and I have to say it wasn't by choice but by necessity. Or I should say that God led us to this path. Every time we tried to homeschool in the conventional method, some life changing event would happen that led to us being very flexible in learning. (I pretty much left it up to them).
Both of my boys were working full time by the time they were 14 (family business). They both learned how to balance a checkbook. And last December the oldest moved out on his own,and his brother remodeled the basement (mostly at his own expense).
My youngest will get his diploma this spring. Both boys plan to sign up for classes this fall at the local community college. They plan to start their own business of Land Surveying and Property apppraisal. No, they're not rocket scientists or lawyers or doctors, but they are very mature, responsible adults who are grounded in their faith. And to me that means success!!!
I think you have to go with what feels right to you, but after years of stressing about "not keeping up with the public school" I have finally realized that as long as they turn out to be adults that I can be proud of then thats what truly matters (to me anyway). Hope this helps!
