Dear Jo,

Welcome to the world of homeschooling! Please don't ever apologize for a lengthy post. It's good to get a little background on your situation. Their observations about how the public school standardizes all the little kiddos is very correct. That's only one of their questionable techniques.

Teaching textbooks starts at the fifth-grade level. For a child as young as seven, I don't believe you need such an expensive program (unless you really have trouble in math). I don't know how advanced your daughter is, but I would recommend Math-U-See, or one of the commonly used workbook programs such as ABeka, Bob Jones, or Horizons. I have been using Math-U-See for many years. I believe they have a tape or CD they will send you free to give you an intro to the program. It may be worth it for you to check it out before making a decision. In the beginning it can be expensive (purchasing the manipulatives, and teacher materials), but for the children following all you need is an extra text. When my guys were little, they always enjoyed a workbook (they felt important) and plenty of manipulatives such as little teddy bear counters, bingo chips etc.

I could go on and on, but I don't know where to start. I would be very willing to talk to you over the telephone and give you some of my input (I've been homeschooling for 15 years and have checked out many many programs). If you're interested in doing this, please e-mail me or post and I'll e-mail you my phone number. I love helping and encouraging others with homeschooling.

Very sincerely,
