Lisa Here is my idea. Create cards with both the printed word and a picure of the word. Show the card to your student, and say the word. Ask your student what the word is. Start with a small amount of cards (like five), once these cards have been memorized add five more cards. I also suggest going to rosettastone.com. This is a great program to teach people how to learn a different language. See if your local library has one of their programs or try the trial on their website. Use their ideas of adding and combining different words to teach your student how to read. I hope this will help.
