Has anyone any experience with something like this?
When I read to my son, who is 9, he will often stop me (very often) after a sentence or two and ask me to re-read it. Then he will have to repeat it to himself (sometimes you can even see his lips moving), think for a few seconds and then he'll be like, "ok, I get it, " and he's ready for me to read more. If we have the book so he can see the words as well then we will sometimes get a little farther but he still seems to need to read the material himself and then think about it. He has no hearing problems according to the tests done by the pediatrician. It's also not anything to do with my reading as no other children in the family have that same problem. It happens more with non-fiction than fiction but happens with fiction as well. If he reads by himself he can usually grasp the information and he has good recall in all cases, as long as he has had the information explained to him if he didn't understand it the first time around. This may not sound like a big deal but it is very frustrating for myself as well as his sisters when we are all reading together, and even for him. Other than that he is very bright, great at math, and very sweet and well behaved. He does get frustrated by other things easily, his reaction being crying more often than anger. He does sometimes loses attention and focus but it is random as to when that happens and it is not often enough that it is an issue.
I'm sorry this is so long but I wanted to try and get across the hearing/comprehension issue to see if anyone has experience a similar type thing. I have no idea how to help him but don't want to let this go until he is one day sitting in lectures and can't understand a word being said! Thanks for any responses,
Nancy
