I too am a literacy volunteer (LV of America) tutoring an adult who never learned to read or write and English isn't his first language, I have found that the Explode the Code program is very helpful for all ages. Abeka is good and there is a great ESL website I just found where you can make your own material including flashcards for free: www.eslhq.com (ESL Headquarters) The more you read to him books of interest and the more he focuses with you guiding him the better he'll do. Try not to get too upset if he doesn't learn as fast as you'd like him to. A good picture dictionary or elemenatary school or ESL dictionary can help as can primers and grammar books with a Charlotte Mason philosophy. I can only work with my adult learner one day a week at his home but have taught first graders and homeschooled my own children and find that a lot of the readers and books that are on the sonlight catalogue to be fantastic and interesting as well. Since he knows the language (English) your Dad should be able to do well esp. if you can practice with him 2- 3 times a week. (And have him read books on tape etc. for homework) Best wishes! Feel free to email me for more ideas.
