Susie,

I hope you come back to read this, since it was posted back in November! We're using Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself by Reading Horizons. It is working for us because it is multi-sensory, direct instruction, intensive phonics. We're using it specifically for my severely dyslexic 11 year old son, and he's progressing well. I'm also using it for my typical 8 and 6 year old sons, and it's working for them, too.

It hits all angles of the subject - the student stands and writes on a chalkboard/whiteboard - he repeats the rules and copies them on the board; there is dictation of words they must sound out - again on the board, dictation of the words by spelling them out (requiring the student to remember the sequence of letters). They copy from lists of words and read them - working on attention to detail in the letter sequence. The rules are presented in a clear fashion. Students mark the words according to the phonics rules. There are sight words to be learned, that are words most commonly used - the, from, he, she, mother, father, so they can immediately read sentences that make sense.

We love it!
Bev
