Hi,
I'm not an expert at all in the areas that you are concerned but I will give you my 2 cents. I've done the reverse and trusted that the ps could handle my daughters special needs. Now I'm finding she's about 4 years behind and supposed to be ready for ms. I'm really displeased, to say the least.

First of all if you're going to stay in public school get an advocate you will assist you in IEP's. Call another IEP and get less homework. I know about the imagery thing. Linadamood Bell addresses this in their programs, very steep. You need to be able to see an image in your mind in order to remember it. I can do this easily, but my daughter can't. You do things such as air writing and other motor skills to assist with the memory. The key is this child needs to see it, say it, hear it and do it. If she does these things remembering should follow.

It does sound like the ps. has helped her considerably. You must be in a great state. I'm in NM 49/50. How low are these 2 test areas compared to everything else, that is the clincher. I'd also get an outside evaluation to make sure that none of the tests they have used are inflated. Remember we aren't all avg. across the board. We will have lower and higher areas. It really sounds like your daughter is doing nicely. I believe design memory is when they show the student an age appropriate design and then they need to reconstruct the image on paper from memory. If she can't do this then she probably has a visual spatial problem and a concept imagery problem. I believe sound symbol has to do with relating letters with their sounds, but I'm not sure so don't take my word for it. How does she read??? What level book does she pick up and read for pleasure?? I can relate to her some because my daughter has some of these problems, only worse and she's 11, about your daughters age. My daughter is in 2nd except for writing which is 3rd, history and science is at 4th or 5th.

Hope this helps some,
Sue
