(Sorry this is so long)I homeschooled up until a few years ago when I realized my daughter had learning disailities that I was not able to break through and went to the public school system for help. My daughter was tested and all they said was yes she has learning disailities and we can help. I put her in school after much prayer and personal agony. She took off like a shot in school and improved rapidly and I was delighted. I always worked closely with her teachers and things have gone great until this year. I have seen her progress slow with each year her improvement is less but that is to be expected as she is close to grade level and above in some areas. With that back ground my concern was that she cannot seem to remember things. She is going into grade 6 this coming year and her Spelling is at about grade 2 her Math is about grade 5 she does not know her Math facts, her Spelling is really bad. Years ago when homeschooling I wrote into one of these boards and we were experiencing extreme difficulty in learning numbers. Someone wrote to me and said it sounded like poor symbol imagery. I am not exactly sure what that is but Jessica still cannot remember our home address, telephone numbers, friends numbers etc. I maintain that is not "normal" but the school pulled Jessi out of the learning disabled program this year and expects her to go into grade 6 as she is. I know that she is going to come home frustrated and in tears and I will be the one wiping them. The school tested her and because she tests so high in most areas they said she is fine. They claim that she just does not study her math facts and Spelling. Which is not true. They retested her this year based on my concerns and the only areas she tested low in were "Design Memory and Sound Symbol" they told me that these areas were "insignificant" and the psychologist even said "she would have trouble doing that section" so we were to just ignore those scores. I about had a fit. I personnally believe that their belief is this poor child was homeschooled by an ignorant mother and that is why she came to us with a problem, we have "fixed" most of it and are now done.I have butted heads with them about the amount of homework being given and because I am of a different opinion they look at me as the "problem".
Can anyone explain what these 2 sections of tests represent and how having a low score in them would translate into which areas a child might be weak in. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.
