You've scared us all away with all these questions that can't be answered simply!
First, there is no "best" program. What works for one may not work for another; you find your son's learning style and find a curriculum geared toward it, and hope it works! Sometimes you have to do some tweaking to make it suit your needs. There are books and magazines and online websites to help you if you do a search.
I don't know that anything has to be accredited. But the time you put into it depends on the laws of your state. Where I live, it depends on which accountability group you register with. Registering with the school board means you will put in the same hours as public school children, while our Option 3 merely requires 180 days of certain subjects, leaving the time element up to each individual family.
I don't have any success stories. You may have to Google that one as well. I'm in my 10th year of homeschooling, 8th as a single parent. But my kids' talents aren't in academics. Thankfully, homeschooling has allowed them to pursue interests where they do excel, so they do have self-confidence.
