good luck and hope all goes well for both of you!
One thing is important in unschooling: you need to define for yourself what the boundaries are. SOme unschoolers take a very laissez-faire approach that basically the kid can do whatever he wants, including watch TV all day if that's his choice. If that's your route, cool.If you do decide that your son cannot just text and watch video games, you and he need to have that discussion up front. Otherwise he may get just as angry when he finds that homeschooling is not what he thought.

The other thing is that he's in 9th grade now, so it's time to make career counseling and preparation for the work world a BIG part of this. You've never used trig and calc, but if your son wanted to be, say, a computer engingeer, or a bioengineer who designs hi-tech prostheses, or an architect, he'd need that stuff. If he wants to be a finance wizard he'll need at least some stats. Or, would he rather be a plumber? or a veterinarian? or join the Marines? This is the time for him to start making choices, and let that dictate his learning plan, as well as the other way round - it's a two way decision process. Otherwise he could find his career choice closed off because he just left out a whole area of study. But you're right, most people don't need to take everything. The earleir you make up your mind what job you want, the less time you waste taking extra subject areas.
