I also started by homeschooling a high schooler. It can be done! My situation was completely different, but I also just jumped in as a last resort.
I have minimal experience with SOS (one semester of Biology) and it didn't work well for us. I haven't heard of the other program you mention.
I think any materials can work, and I've really seen homeschooled kids succeed with almost every variety of curriculum. I do think you'll need to commit some time each day to working out any questions etc., because that one-on-one & problem-solving modeling makes the difference, in my opinion.
Some things *I* really like, to add to your exploration:
- Math Relief for algebra I and II
- My Father's World for Bible/history/literature & they also have some good electives
