we finished grammar in 8th grade so we're doing writing now; mainly just a weekly paper on whatever literature or history we're working on, plus a longer essay for the year. literature: 1 unit on the Heroic Quest - reading Beowulf, Gilgamesh, Le Chanson de Roland, Le Mort d'Artur, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. 1 unit on non-English novels: Madame Bovary, Remembrance of Things Past, The Magic Mountain, Anna Karenina, Don Quixote, Crime and Punishment. History: The Teaching Company's History of China Civics and philosophy: Hobbes' Leviathan, selections from Locke, Rousseau, the Federalist, JS Mill, the speeches of Edmund Burke, the Constitution, a selection of Supreme Court decisions math: Calculus I Science: physics and astronomy language: Rosetta Stone Arabic I and Spanish IV; Latin II PE: weekly Sierra Club expeditions, ending with a 4-day Outward Bound trip. We run a 5K together 3 times a week.
