In Reply to: How to deal with 11th grader who wants to go to Public School.. for social reasons. posted by Deborah in CA on July 21, 2009 at 1:36 pm:

It may help to discuss the questions below with your husband and aim toward a conclusion and then see how your child answers them. Your child may (but doubtful) come to the same conclusion as you. Anyway they may help just to have something to work off of. We did let our sons go to the school for a class or two. This year I found nothing worth the hassle of messing our routine up for our youngest son. I know he will want to do something also for the social reasons. Guess we need to start looking at our situation too.

Does your child have friends established that are in the public school now?

Are you pleased with these friends?

What has been the past history of friendships made?

How has your child responded to secular choices that may not be the best choice to do?

Is your child one to stand up for what he/she believes in? (I do not mean confrontationally)

Is there a possible compromise with taking only a couple classes there and the rest at home?

Will your child still earn a diploma from the school even though he/she are starting in 11th grade?

Do the reasons given show maturity or just the need to do what everyone else is doing?

Where will your child gain the most scholastically, socially, spiritually, and emotionally?

Happy discussing!
