I haven't been coming to this board recently as my child will be a senior next year. This year we took a different approach using the community college and a homeschool class (for writing).
But, so you at least know you've been heard....
We used WriteShop I & II. I thought it was a pretty good program, though my son is not a writer. He still struggles in this area. We also used some of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) DVDs. Many people really like this program. I liked, however, I thought it covered the same material as WriteShop.
Something you may consider is an online writing program. Potter's School offers classes that look very challenging and for college prep. Friends have used these classes and can't say enough good about them. I suggest registering early.
And, as far as history, we used SL American history for awhile, then switched toNotgrass, and BF. You may want to look at Notgrass. It uses some original documents and not as many books. We did enjoy Albert Marrin's history books. Maybe you could use movies for some of his history. Netflix has a good selection of classics and historical-WWI & WWII movies and series.
