I did once with a Rod and Staff 2 book. I wasn't sure if it was going to work well for us or not and a very kind lady loaned us the book and teacher manual . We used it , keeping it in good condition of course , and found it didn't work well for my daughter so I mailed it back to her . Everyonce in a while you will find a kind person who is willing to do that . But not many people do or will because there aren't enough honest people out there .
There are several options you can try .
There are free websites : Ambleside Online which is similar to Sonlight . Mater Amabalis which is free as well .
You can utilize your library as much as you can with these two free curriculums .
There are lots of free online worksheets as well .
Some families piece meal and get a little bit of curriculum here and there and get as much as they possibly can off of the used homeschool boards and places like Ebay and Amazon .
Not sure if this is an option for you in your state , but cyberschooling is another . You recieve curriculum and a computer for no charge. Of course you have to follow the school's rules by participating in state testing and the like. But this is what we've done for the past three years because money has been tight for us . Of course you don't get the freedom to use what you want . But something is always better then nothing .
Those are some things I can come up with at the moment .
