I'd be cautious about necessarily equating "eastern" with "bad" or "demonic". Not necessarily true at all. I'd be even more cautious about equating everything labelled "alternative". Some of it is obvious rubbish. Some is perfectly sound; it's just that there's no way that Big Pharm can make obscene profits on it, so it gets discredited right along with the ouija-board nonsense.
Acupuncture is one of those that unfortuately has been labelled "alternative" or worse, "new age", when in fact it's been used for millienia. There is nothing weird or spooky or quasi-spiritual about it. It is very straightforward and, assuming you go to someone properly trained and certified, it is safe. I've had it myself, once for intractable pain following a back injury, and once for asthma. My lung function had gotten so bad they couldn't raise my meds any more; they were driving my blood pressure through the roof. The next step was oral steroids, and those things can literally make you crazy. After acupuncture, I was able to reduce my med dosage to a reasonable level. The back pain is gone and I can once again go backpacking - with no pain meds. It is not likely to be a placebo effect, either. I have taken my dog for acupuncture to treat her hip displasia. A dog can have no ideas or expectations about the effect of such treatment. The fact that my German Shepherd, who was nearly crippled and in pain, can go for walks again tells me this works. And I don't think the dog was in any contact with any spirits here! Given the terrible costs of addiction to opiate pain meds in this country, I hardly think use of OxyContin is more "Christian" than acupuncture, which is non addictive and leaves your mind clear.
