I would not bring the brother home so that the sister isn't alone. For one thing, I don't buy into our society's preoccupation with importance of friends and/or with not being lonely. I would teach her how to deal with such feelings and do what I could to enable good relationships as they are possible (elderly neighbors, the orchestra, long distance relationships with cousins or family friends, she'll be old enough for a job soon) if I could do it without sending her the message that lonely was all that bad of a thing. Sometimes simply realizing that it isn't a really bad thing helps to come to terms with it (I've had several such seasons in my life). I'd treat the news about all that is going on in the cousin's school as I do shopping: acknowleding that I like something or it is a good thing is not the same as having to have it or do it.

I would stick to my word to the son, that this was the last year of public school. Especially as he has not gotten his act together within the public school.

Can't your daughter go with you for the car rides? Rides are excellent times for sharing.
