here in south Alabama. Today(Sunday) was our 4th annual "tailgate party" at church. It's overall theme is "a taste of 242". It is like a fall festival and it's open to the community and it's a wonderful way to invite someone to church. Our church is growing so rapidly and in order for new people to stay connected and get to know other people we have small groups called 242 groups and this festival is also a way to get people involved in small groups. In Acts as the early church's number of believers increased rapidly Acts 2:42 says--And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. This is what our 242 groups are all about. There are currently about 35 242 groups that meet on different days from Sunday evening thru Thurs. evening. We fellowship at the "host home", share a meal, do bible study and have prayer together. Twice a year we do a 242 kick off so new people will be more likely to participate in a group and if you want to change groups to have the opportunity to meet and fellowship with new people you can do that too. That is what we usually do.

Back to the "tailgate party". Each 242 group is assigned a booth area and they set up some kind of theme and serve food but only "a taste" like appetizer portions. Everyone goes around to the different booths or areas and gets a taste of whatever they are serving. The groups are judged and there are prizes given for original idea, friendliest group, best food, etc. The overall honor is to win the "golden tailgate" the best overall. It literally is a gold painted Dodge tailgate and the winning group keeps it until the next year. It really has become very competitive and the planning of what each group is doing is very secretive. I am proud to say that our group along with another group we decided to pair up with won the "Golden Tailgate" WooHoo!
Our theme was Wild Wild West. We had a general store facade, complete with a jail and pictures of our "most wanted" posters (the church staff were the names of the most wanted) and we had a teepee. Even though this was a joint effort with our groups the cowboys and indians served separate food.

There were some other really cool ideas that other groups had as well. One was themed around the left behind series. They had signs like 'Don't get left behind, join the blank 242 group' they had chairs set up with just clothing laid in them and had their grill set up and coolers that had their taste of food in them.

Another was set up like a gas station stating 'Get your gas here' and a gas pump that had gas for 2.42. Three guesses and two don't count what they were serving.

Another was the Flintstones. They were all dressed like Flintsones characters and even had made a really cool Flintstone mobile. Fred and Barney would from time to time put on the Flintstone mobile and walk around the festival.

Another had set their space up like a dance floor. They dressed like the seventies disco era and their theme was the Soul Survivor Train.

It was great fun as always. There was at least a thousand people, probably more. I left out speaking of the specific foods that was served because of this being a vegetarian website, but there were things that would have been vegetarian friendly. I am not a vegetarian, but my Mom is and we actually have 2 people in our group who are. I am glad to know that so when It is my turn to prepare the meal for our group I can make sure that I have something that is friendly to all dietary preferences.

I hope I haven't bored you all and thank you for allowing me to share the experience of a blessed day. I hope all of yours are blessed too.
