The socks got a whole lot less irritating when we went to a system of each person having (mostly) one kind of sock, and each persons different than the others. Now I don't match them into pairs, I just sort them into two piles (dark and light) and then the darks into two stacks and the lights into five stacks. Then there are just a few misc leftovers to be matched (the thermal socks, a few dark dress socks for those with normally white and so on).
