We went from the east. The Chief Joseph Highway was awesome. and the Beartooth Highway. They are different enough to be worth doing both... the Chief Joseph is more canyons and trees and color, the Beartooth is higher and more bare rock, short grass alpine (and some snow). The view is many miles from many points on either.
Someone from work who grew up out there told us to go twotracking up the Silver Creek trail near Red Lodge. That was a highlight of our trip (well, it was full of highlights, but still). Actually, he said to go up the Hellriser Trail if you want to get extreme (but still safe... mostly). We did have a four wheel drive truck, though, so if you don't you might ask around in town and check it out in more detail. We used the four wheel drive but I think more because we had it than because we really needed it. Although, it was August and dry. So....
We liked Pompey's Pillar, but not enough to drive way out of the way for it. The Little Bighorn Battlefield was initially disappointing there isn't too much more than the ground. However, I like reading history and I've noticed having seen the terrain gave a lot of depth and understanding to the history I read.
Rafting on the Stillwater River was big highlight of the trip.
The Grizzly Bar in Roscoe is worth the drive (from Red Lodge anyway). It is a restaurant despite the name. This is a veg site, so I'll say it is not veg. One can eat veg there very well with the sides and salads and so on, if one doesn't mind a lot of carnivores surrounding him.
We had very little time at Yellowstone. Hayden's Valley was our favorite because of the buffalo and elk and pronghorns. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone river was probably second favorite. Or possibly swimming in the fire river. That is the only place swimming is allowed and it isn't encouraged but it was a lot of fun.
I don't have any recommendations for eating close to Yellowstone. We ate cheap to budget in nice restaurants elsewhere on the trip.
