I just used some paper and a pen and wrote out basics until my son could read 3 letter words decently. From there we went to 3 letter word phonics books and used a bit of flash card type materials.
CLP has some good stuff and all really cheap.

Reading does not need to be boring.
In my opinion, 'Teaching Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons' is EXTREMELY BORING and uninteresting to the child.
Why torture them?

Another good tip? Leap Frog phonics dvds. All of them.
