I have the same problem with my 13 yo. I had him tested and it turned out that he had problems with short term memeory and then when he got the infomation into long term memory he had problems with retriving the infomation. Example: he was given a question: "what color is a carrot?" his answer was yellow. Not that he didn't know what the color was but he couldn't remember the name of oragne. Here are some suggestions that the specialist gave me. Just give him only one or two things to remember. Ex: go up stairs (1) and get my book (2). Gradually add instructions when he was successful for a few weeks. Or give him a picture on 3x5 card of what is needed. For reading we started labeling objects in the house. ex: put a R on the refridge and an S on the sink. Ect. I suspect that she does know the letters and sounds but can't retreive the info. Another thing that we did was to read to him and point out the words as we read. as he got to know the letters and putting them together I would ask him the words. Your friend may need to use Reading Refux, which was very helpful wtih my son. We still struggle with reading but he can read. Our prolem now is mulp tables. He still struggles with these. Next year we may start letting him use a calacator so that he isn't held up. Tell your friend that it will get better and good luck.
Debbie
