the texts are 54, 65, 76, 87, Algebra 1/2, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math [after Al 1 &2 and Ad Math syudents have actually completed a year of high school Geometry also --three books=four HS math courses, years] then on to Calculas and trig and physics.

If you follow all the activities Saxon actually has hands on learning up through 87 and a bit higher in some subjects. DIVE CDs are good for teaching lessons.

stick with the same edition for his courses as they revised their program quite a bit. I prefer 2nd edition, but the newer one is excelent -- check and see if 3rd and 4h are compatible, I think they ar-- just not 2nd and 3rd -- you would not want to switch back and fourth between the editions from level to level, as he might miss some topics that he would need later. Not all 5th or 6th grade books teach the exct same things.

have him take the placement test -- that will give you an idea where to start.

In the 2nd editions -- 87 is move of a review level for those who might need it. I believe that in the 3rd editon series that they switched things around and Algebra 1/2 is the review level.

I'd be glad to answer any other questions, let me know.
