Subject:	Can anyone help me understand imaginary numbers?

Both my son and I are asking the same questions: Why does this matter? & When are they used? The lesson with a practical application in Teaching Textbooks doesn't help and trying to understand what they are explaining by analyzing and comparing them to real numbers just leads to more frustration.
