I used to do evaluations and classroom instruction. I worked with several dyslexics and other reading and math strugglers.

some basic starting points/questions

She has tried various programs, okay has she always been homeschooled? Does she have reverals - b/d? inversions - reads was for saw? omitions? choosing a word with similar spelling or does she guess from clues from the context song for tune? Can she make letters properly or is her penpanship hurting? can she copy when looking at a paper on her desk, up on the wall -- as in a classrroom? Can she draw and copy shapes LOTS better than she can make letters? Are numbers just as hard? How about her understanding of math topics, counting, number sequence, adding -- getting more and such? does she have age like speech [sounds and understandability]? word use in her speech, does she use simple words or sentence structure or multisyllable words and compound complex sentences in telling a story?

I now these are lots of questions, l;ike I said it is difficult ay best to try to really tell what is going on and suggest. I could assume she might be and give you some ways to help, but not knowing where she actually is functioning, it is hard to suggest where to start. Does your friend have internet/email? or even snailmail, I could give her some screening activities that would only indicate a strong possiblity of such a struggle going on. Needing to know how she did with what was used -- as performance may also give some indications. If she does not need a diagnosis for state/ps assistance, but just for help in choosing the things that will help her DD learn, informal testing could help in doing so.

Dyslexics do well with various programs, especially if multisensory activities are included in these programs. Expensive tutors use certain programs, but other ones can be tweaked with methods that work for dyslexics making them just as effective and easily done by the parent who is willing to learn methods and use them -- not forsaking them when it takes time or when progress is nade and think that manipulatives for math or multi-sensory drills are not needed any more. I've worked with HS and college students who did sooo much better when these phonics drills were continued, thoruout their schooling. And they as adults could see the gradual decline in spelling and writing skills when they were ceased.

I would be willing to email/mail assistance if desired, let me know.
