Have you had his eyes tested by an eye doctor - not just the peditrician? My son has a very slight eye problem (eyes cross slightly when reading). The eye doc says this makes reading much harder because they have to focus on every word to see it and that makes him tired and also affects comprehension. We read out loud every day - anything he wants to read. I hope that helps.
