Hi Judy,

I would do a brief evaluation of your son to determine the cause of his challenge. It may be short term memory deficit, but there may also be a misunderstanding of what reading is all about. Does he hear the sounds as they are being said? If I segment the word and say each sound slowly 'b - a - t', would he be able hear the word. Then is he able to segment the word 'cat' - say each sound separately. This determines his phonemic awareness. Can he distinguish between the vowel sounds?

I use PhonographiX, which works on auditory, phonemic awareness, starting with beginning sounds and working up to multisyllable words.

Reading Reflex is a good program, too, although perhaps not as intuitive. If you decide to use this program, be sure to read the whole book before you begin.

You might want to check out my website for more information about reading.
